“World Alone” is the preview single from Tony Iommi’s first solo album in over 20 years, marking his third official studio release under his own name.
On this track—and across the upcoming record—he is joined by Norwegian vocalist Jørn Lande, who has fronted at least five bands over his career and frequently lends his talents to high-profile collaborations.
The main reason for the long gap between Iommi solo records was his focus on Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne. With the recent timing, he felt ready to put out a new full-length effort gathered from material he’s worked on over time.
Iommi’s guitar playing is instantly unmistakable. Much like Keith Richards or Brian May, he possesses a signature tone and style that serves as the centerpiece of this track. Lande’s vocals deliver the same power fans have loved across his 30-plus-year career, and he sounds in prime form at 58. Iommi’s riffing has complimented everyone from Ozzy to Ronnie James Dio over the decades, and it fits Lande naturally on this new offering.
Lyrically, the song deals with themes of hope and overcoming life’s obstacles, filtered through a classic heavy metal lens—using references like jail cells and dark clouds to land its message with grit rather than straightforward sentimentality.
The accompanying music video runs over seven minutes with a distinct dystopian aesthetic that complements the song’s underlying themes of survival and resilience.
